APC LAGOS WEST : COMRADE KAYODE OPEIFA MAY BACK ADEBULE ON GENDER GROUND
The jostle for the three senate slots in Lagos is becoming more interesting. In what looks more like an in-house gender balancing arrangement, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress is seriously considering former female Deputy Governor of the state, Mrs Idiat Adebule for the Lagos West slot. Consultations are ongoing to ensure her emergence, through the ballots at the primaries. It will be recalled that Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, Lagos Central, did not obtain the party's nomination form due to the fact that she needs to maximally support her husband, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's presidential aspiration.
In what looks like a major political twist, information emanating from Comrade Kayode Opeifa's camp regarding the Lagos west ticket of All Progressives Congress, the senatorial district might be having, come 2023, in the Red chamber, another resourceful and intelligent female representation.
According to an anonymous ally of the former Transport Commissioner, among many considerations presented to Hon. Opeifa was the need to have a gender balance to further encourage the women folk in Lagos politics. The recent agitation and demand by women groups in the country and especially at the NASS is a conviction towards this direction, it was further pointed out that women needed
such opportunity to increase the horizon of female participation and gender equity in Lagos politics. Our source further stated that "Lagos has always been a pacesetter, hence the decision to impress it upon the comrade democrat to support Dr. Mrs. Idiat Oluranti Adebule". "This might be announced soonest or we see that not much will be done any further by his team" the sources concluded.
With the likelihood of this development, it is still not clear if he will remain on the ballot or not, in compliance with the pressures from very high quarters. The final battle would be interesting going by day political background of the three gladiators. The indigene factor may no longer be an issue as all of them claim to be "Aworis".
There have been different criticism of DR Mrs. Idiat Oluranti Adebule on her eligibility to participate in the process of the party primary election aside from the issues of her academic qualifications to which her media team has responded swiftly. Obanikoro's past political inconsistencies, his decamping to PDP during his first tenure at the Senate remains solidly in the minds of many. Many are of the view that "M.O.", as he is fondly called, may not be easily controlled by the party if he wins the ticket.
However, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the leading aspirant until recently despite all the push and agitations from the Obanikoro's team. Opeifa, a renowned public transportation expert, member of the civil society community and a loyal progressive is definitely backed by the majority of young party members.
The stage is set.
